Jane Woodforde nee Gardner

Jane Gardner married Samuel Woodforde RA. on 7 October 1815 at Saint Bride's, Fleet Street in London,   It is thought she was one of his models.  She was born in about 1791/96 in Amberley, Sussex.

The couple moved to Italy but Samuel died of fever at Ferrara on 27 July 1817.  They had no children.   After Samuel's death, the Woodforde family disputed her ownership of some of Samuel's pictures, and legal actions followed.

In 1839, Jane was living in Amberley, Sussex, when she petitioned the Royal Academy for an increase in the pension she was receiving.  By 1848, she was living at 3 Smith Terrace, Kings Road, Chelsea but was at 46 Church Street, Amberley in the 1851 census.

Jane later lived with Edward Jenden Gallup by whom she had a son, Edward, who was baptised on 6 July 1821 at Cowes, Isle of Wight.  It is possible that Jane and Edward chose not to marry because she would have lost her income from the Royal Academy under the terms of Samuel Woodforde's will.

Edward (senior) died in 1859.  Jane died in Newington, London, in 1861 and was buried in Amberley.

A portrait of her by Samuel titled The Fortune Teller was acquired by the Parson Woodforde Society in 2014.  Following an appeal for finance, the painting was restored and is now kept at a private residence in Castle Cary.
