George Augustus Woodforde

George Augustus Woodforde (1801-1877) was the youngest son of William Woodforde and Anne Dukes.   William was the Revd James Woodforde's 'Nephew Bill'.

He was born in Castle Cary on 1st April 1801 and baptised at Ansford on 9th April 1801.

He married Harriet Mary Leir, born 1807, the eldest daughter of Revd William Leir, Rector of Ditcheat in Somerset and his wife Harriet, the daughter of Randolph Marriott of Leases Hall, Bedale.

They married on 8th August 1832. They lived at Ansford House, which was in the family's possession for about two hundred years.

George followed his grandfather into the legal profession.   In the 1851 census he is living in Ilminster.  He is listed as a solicitor in Castle Cary in commercial directories for 1866.  He died on 23rd December 1877 at Wincanton.  His funeral was held on 28th December 1877 at Ansford.

The children of George Augustus Woodforde and Harriet Mary Leir

Charles Neville (c1836-1878).  He married at Bristol in 1862. It is believed that he had no children. He died at Barton Regis, Gloucestershire.

Robert Reginald Augustus (1837-1868) who was born at Castle Cary.   In the 1861 census he was serving on a naval ship in the English Channel with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.  He died unmarried at Yarmouth in 1868.

Alexander John (1839-1909).

Randolph (1839 - 1909) who was born in Ansford on 3 August 1839.  A solicitor and landowner.

George William (1844-1892) who married Harriett, the daughter of Revd Robert French Lawrence, vicar of St Mary's, Chalgrove, Oxford and his wife Elizabeth Lawrence nee Coates.   Harriett was born at Chalgove in about 1856.  As a widow in the 1901 census, she was living at Leyton in Essex.  George died on 27 March 1892.  They had five children, Harriett, Helen, Alice, William and George.

Helen Maud, the eldest daughter, was born in about 1834 at Castle Cary.  In 1870 she married her cousin Henry Whalley Woodforde, a solicitor.   In 1871 they were living in Bloomsbury, London.  In the 1891 and 1901 census returns they were living at North Tytherley in Surbiton. They had one child who survived only a few hours after birth, but they adopted Rose, one of Henry's nieces, a daughter of Charles Clutterbuck Woodforde, a solicitor who died young.

Georgina Julia, baptised on 13 February 1841 at Castle Cary. Died 18 July 1865.

Alice Berkeley, born 12 September 1843 and baptised in Castle Cary on the 17 May 1846.  Alice married George Goodden in the spring of 1870 in the registration district of Newton Abbott.  Alice later married  Arthur Dickinson in Lufton, Somerset in the spring of 1873 after the death of George Goodden.

Harriet Anne who was buried on 28 April 1843 at Castle Cary aged nine months.
